Czech Republic and South Africa draw, minimising their chances of progressing in the group
Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw in Atlanta that leaves both sides needing a win in their final group game to have any hope of progressing, in a match also notable for being the first at a World Cup refereed by an all-female officiating crew
Czech Republic and South Africa drew 1-1 in their Group A clash in Atlanta, a result that severely dents both sides' chances of reaching the knockout stage. Michal Sadílek gave the Czechs an early lead in the 6th minute, finishing from close range after a cross from the left. But Czech Republic sat back after taking the lead and were punished in the 83rd minute when substitute Pavel Schulz handled in the penalty area, allowing Teboho Mokoeana to convert from the spot.
Both sides now need a win in their final group matches — Czech Republic against co-host Mexico and South Africa against South Korea — to have any realistic hope of advancing.
The match made history as the first at a World Cup to be officiated by an all-female refereeing crew, with American Tori Penso as the main referee.
