Canada steamroll nine-man Qatar and look towards the knockouts
Canada thrashed Qatar 6-0 in Group B to all but seal their place in the knockout round, with Jonathan David's hat-trick the highlight as Qatar finished with nine men after two red cards
Canada recorded their first ever World Cup victory in emphatic fashion, demolishing Qatar 6-0 in Group B to move firmly into knockout contention. The match was shaped by two red cards for the hosts — Homam Ahmed in the first half and Asim Madibo in the second — leaving Qatar with nine men for the majority of the second half.
Kyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a close-range finish after the goalkeeper parried a Jonathan David volley. David then struck twice before half-time — a stunning volley in the 29th minute and a tap-in in stoppage time — to make it 3-0. Nathan Saliba added a fourth with a brilliant free-kick in the 64th minute, dedicated to the injured Ismaël Koné, who had been on the receiving end of Madibo's reckless challenge. Mohamed Al-Manai turned the ball into his own net in the 75th, before David completed his hat-trick in the 90th to seal the 6-0 rout.
Canada now have four points and are on the verge of the last 16. Qatar, with one point, are in serious trouble.
