Sergej Barbarez: For the first 60 minutes we were the better team
Bosnia & Herzegovina coach Sergej Barbarez insisted the 1-4 scoreline against Switzerland was unfair, saying his side were the better team for the first 60 minutes before a goal and a red card changed everything
Bosnia & Herzegovina coach Sergej Barbarez had little to celebrate after the 1-4 defeat to Switzerland in Group B, insisting the result did not reflect what happened on the pitch.
"The scoreline is too high and doesn't accurately reflect what happened. When you go down to ten men against a team like Switzerland, who have world-class players and exploit every space, it becomes extremely difficult to control things," he began.
"The desire of the boys was enormous. For 60 minutes we played at a very high level and were clearly the better team on the pitch. Everything fell apart with the first goal, where we failed to clear the ball from the penalty area, and immediately after that came the direct red card for Tarik Muharemović. If I could turn back time, I would change exactly those two moments — that's when we lost our balance in midfield," he added.
On their final group match against Qatar, which could decide their tournament fate, Barbarez was defiant: "This match is not the last train for us — it's just the group stage and we know how it works. We'll do everything possible to analyse our mistakes, prepare as well as we can and win the next game to get out of the group."
