Own goal helps Austria past Jordan
Austria edged past World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1 in Group J, but needed an own goal in the 76th minute to break the deadlock before Arnautović sealed it from the spot deep in stoppage time
Austria returned to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a hard-fought 3-1 win over debutants Jordan in Group J. Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead in the 21st minute with a long-range strike, but Jordan — more dangerous than expected — levelled through Oliwan in the 50th. A disallowed Arnautović goal for handball in the 67th minute summed up Austria's frustrations.
The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when a cross deflected off Yazan Abu Al-Arab into his own net. Jordan came close to another own goal late on, before Arnautović finally put the result beyond doubt from the penalty spot in the 12th minute of stoppage time.
It is Austria's first World Cup win since 1990, when they beat the USA 2-1 in Italy. Next up, Ralf Rangnick's side face favourites Argentina, while Jordan take on Algeria.
