Deschamps: The first win isn't decisive, but it brings relief
Didier Deschamps said France's win over Senegal brought relief, crediting a positional tweak involving Dembélé and Olise as the turning point after a cautious start
France coach Didier Deschamps reflected on his side's 3-1 victory over Senegal in their World Cup opener.
"This win brings relief. We played a little cautiously and stiffly at first — the opponent was very good. After that we managed to open up, especially once we changed the positions of Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise. Bradley Barcola was also very dangerous," said Deschamps.
"Winning the first match isn't decisive in a group of four teams. The French fans have travelled from far away and that's expensive. Football becomes magical when you win and can share those emotions with them," he added.
"As for Barcola, there are many players who have every right to claim a starting spot — Rayan Cherki as well. We're going to need everyone," the France coach concluded.
