Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Squad, Manager, Fixtures & Tournament History
Hosts in 2022 and qualifiers on merit in 2026 — Qatar arrive in North America having earned their place at the tournament for the first time, determined to prove that their World Cup debut was the beginning of a sustained journey at football's highest level.
Qatar are heading to the FIFA World Cup™ for the second time — but for the first time, they have earned it. Four years after hosting the most talked-about World Cup in recent memory, the Maroons return to the global stage having qualified through their performances on the pitch rather than the privilege of the host nation.
Their 2022 debut — three group-stage defeats against Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands — was a steep education, but a valuable one. Real experience against footballing schools from three continents laid a foundation. The mission in North America is to build on it: to show that Qatar's place at this level is permanent, not incidental.
The Coach: Julen Lopetegui
Few coaches arrive at a national team with a résumé as extensive as Lopetegui's. Appointed in May 2025, he guided Qatar to World Cup qualification just months later — their first berth earned through the regular qualifying process. The appointment reflected the Qatar Football Association's ambition: to bring elite-level tactical expertise to a squad combining experience and emerging talent.
Lopetegui's credentials speak for themselves. He led Spain through an unbeaten qualifying campaign for Russia 2018, then managed Real Madrid and Sevilla — winning the 2020 UEFA Europa League with the latter — before taking charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United in the Premier League. A former goalkeeper who came through Real Madrid's academy and represented Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano, he also earned caps for Spain in the mid-1990s. Known for his calm demeanour and meticulous tactical preparation, his influence has been evident in Qatar's disciplined, structured approach throughout this new phase.

How Qatar Qualified
Qatar's path through AFC qualifying was one of steady progression and, ultimately, composed decisive moments. They topped their second-round group with 16 points from five wins, a draw and a defeat, before finishing fourth in the third round — behind Iran and Uzbekistan, who claimed the two automatic berths — and carrying their campaign into the fourth round.
There, with Lopetegui now in the dugout, the team showed balance and resilience. A 2-1 home win over the United Arab Emirates on 14 October sealed their place — Boualem Khoukhi and Pedro Miguel both rising to head home second-half efforts to confirm Qatar as group winners and send them to North America.

Qatar's First World Cup: Qatar 2022
When the opening whistle blew at Al Bayt Stadium in front of more than 67,000 spectators, it was a historic moment — Qatar's first-ever World Cup appearance, on home soil, surrounded by supporters, in a country that had spent years building towards exactly this.
Under Félix Sánchez, the nerves of the occasion showed in a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador on that opening night. They were more assured in attack against Senegal but fell 3-1 to that year's Africa Cup of Nations champions. A final group game against the Netherlands produced goals from Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong, and Qatar's debut ended without a point. But what they gained in those ten days — experience against elite opposition from three continents, on the biggest stage the sport offers — proved to be something more durable than results.
Qatar's All-Time World Cup Goalscorer
Mohammed Muntari wrote his name into Qatari football history in the 78th minute against Senegal at Qatar 2022, rising to head Ismaeel Mohammad's cross into the net for the country's first-ever World Cup goal. The match ended in defeat, but the moment was a milestone — the first entry in a record that the Maroons intend to build upon in North America.
Qatar's Most Capped World Cup Players
Three players were ever-present across all three of Qatar's matches at the 2022 tournament, each completing the full 270 minutes against Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands: Abdelkarim Hassan, Boualem Khoukhi and Akram Afif.
