Legendary Neuer breaks yet more records
Manuel Neuer became the oldest German player at a World Cup and equalled Hugo Lloris's record for most matches played by a goalkeeper at a World Cup.
Manuel Neuer's return to the Germany national team came with a string of record-breaking achievements. The 40-year-old started against Curacao at the 2026 World Cup, becoming the oldest German player ever to appear at a World Cup at the age of 40 years, 2 months and 19 days.
It was also Neuer's fifth World Cup — a feat previously achieved only by Germany's all-time caps record holder Lothar Matthäus. Against Curacao, the 2014 world champion played his 20th World Cup match, drawing level with French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who had previously held the record for most World Cup appearances by a goalkeeper. Neuer can claim the record outright in Germany's next group stage match against Ivory Coast.
The one slight blemish on the day: Neuer was unable to keep a clean sheet against Curacao.
