Iran at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Squad, Manager, Fixtures & Tournament History

Three-time Asian champions and regulars at the World Cup, IR Iran arrive at 2026 for a seventh appearance — still chasing that elusive knockout-stage berth, and with a generation of talent that came closer than ever in Russia 2018.

IR Iran are one of Asian football's most decorated nations — three continental titles and seven FIFA World Cup™ appearances tell the story of a country that has long been a major force in the region. Yet the global stage has so far proven a step too far, with Team Melli yet to progress beyond the group phase in any of their six previous tournament outings.

That is the challenge heading into the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in Canada, Mexico and the United States — and there is genuine belief within the squad that this time could be different. A dominant qualifying campaign and a talented generation of established players have Iran arriving in North America as one of Asia's most dangerous sides.

The Coach: Amir Ghalenoei

Ghalenoei is in his second spell at the helm of the national team, returning to the role in March 2023. Known as "the general" during his playing days as a tenacious midfielder for both Esteghlal and the national team, the Tehran-born tactician made a seamless transition into coaching after retirement in the late 1990s.

His domestic record is exceptional — two league titles with Esteghlal and two more with Sepahan across a five-year period between 2008 and 2013. His first brief spell in charge of the national side came in 2006-07, and since his return he has hit the ground running: guiding Iran to the AFC Asian Cup semi-finals and then steering them through a near-flawless World Cup qualifying campaign. Iran lost just once in 16 qualifying matches — a record that reflects the team's cohesion and competitive strength under his leadership.

How Iran Qualified

Iran entered the AFC qualifying process at the second round, breezing through with dominant wins over Turkmenistan and Hong Kong — dropping points only in two draws with Uzbekistan. The third and decisive round was equally impressive. Six wins from their first eight matches set up a qualification-clinching moment on 25 March 2025, when a Mehdi Taremi brace secured a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan at the iconic Azadi Stadium — enough to confirm Iran's place at a fourth consecutive World Cup.

IR Iran's Best World Cup: Russia 2018

Iran's finest tournament run came at Russia 2018, where they came within one stoppage-time goal of reaching the knockout stage for the first time. Drawn into a group alongside Spain, Portugal and Morocco, they opened with a composed 1-0 win over the Atlas Lions in Saint Petersburg before losing by the same scoreline to Spain in Kazan.

The final group game — Iran against Portugal in Saransk, with coach Carlos Queiroz facing his homeland — was one of the tournament's most gripping matches. Ricardo Quaresma scored a stunning opener just before half-time, but Iran pushed back relentlessly in the second half. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand saved a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty to keep the game alive, and Karim Ansarifard converted a late spot-kick of his own to level at 1-1. With Morocco leading Spain in the other simultaneous match, Iran were briefly in a qualifying position — until Iago Aspas struck in stoppage time for Spain in Kaliningrad to end those hopes. Taremi had one final chance but could only hit the side netting. Iran went home on the narrowest of margins.

IR Iran's Last World Cup: Qatar 2022

Qatar 2022 offered a very different story. A 6-2 opening defeat to England in Al Rayyan was a sobering start, and with ten of the same eleven who had faced Portugal four years earlier still in the squad, questions were being asked about the team's cycle. Iran responded with spirit — two goals deep in stoppage time sealed a 2-0 win over Wales and restored morale — but a 1-0 defeat to the United States in the final group game, settled by a Christian Pulisic strike, ended their campaign once again at the first hurdle.

IR Iran's First World Cup: Argentina 1978

Iran's route to their debut at Argentina 1978 took them through a gruelling qualification campaign involving Saudi Arabia, Syria, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia and Kuwait — ultimately settled by a Ghafour Jahani goal against Australia at a packed Azadi Stadium. At the finals, heavy defeats to the Netherlands and Peru in the group stage set a pattern of early exits that has persisted ever since, though a 1-1 draw with Scotland provided some consolation — and saw Iraj Danaeifard become the first Iranian ever to score at a World Cup.

IR Iran's All-Time World Cup Top Scorer

Only eleven Iranians have ever scored at a World Cup, and only one has done so more than once — Mehdi Taremi, widely regarded as one of the finest players his country has produced. Both of his goals came in the 6-2 defeat to England at Qatar 2022: a poacher's finish from close range and a well-placed late penalty. With Iran back at the finals in 2026, Taremi will have every opportunity to extend that record.

IR Iran's Most Capped World Cup Player

Ehsan Hajisafi leads the all-time Iranian appearance list at the World Cup, having started every group-stage match at Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. The versatile left-sided player — equally effective as a winger, full-back or central midfielder — has played all three positions across his World Cup appearances and continues to perform at a high level for Sepahan well into his mid-thirties.

IR Iran's Most Memorable World Cup Moment

Against a backdrop of political tension between the two countries, Iran's Group F clash with the United States at France 1998 in Lyon took on a significance far beyond football. Before kick-off, the two sets of players linked arms and the Iranians presented their opponents with white flowers as a gesture of peace — a moment that captured global attention.

What followed on the pitch was equally memorable. A looping first-half header from Hamid Estili and a sharp finish from Mehdi Mahdavikia on the counter-attack gave Iran a famous 2-1 victory — one of the most emotionally charged wins in World Cup history, and still cherished by Iranian fans to this day.

IR Iran's Biggest World Cup Win

Iran's most commanding result came against Wales at Qatar 2022 — a 2-0 victory that was far from comfortable until its final moments. With the score goalless as the clock entered the eighth of nine stoppage minutes, Rouzbeh Cheshmi unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike to break the deadlock and send the travelling supporters into raptures. Three minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian chipped substitute goalkeeper Danny Ward to complete a dramatic victory at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
