Eze Out of the England Squad Due to Injury

Eze will miss England's friendlies against Uruguay and Japan due to a calf injury — Harvey Barnes is the likely replacement.

Eberechi Eze will not join the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. The reason is a calf injury, confirmed by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. The attacking midfielder also missed the League Cup final against Manchester City, which ended in a 2-0 defeat, due to the same problem.

Eze was among those included in the extended 35-man squad announced by manager Thomas Tuchel on Friday. England are set to play at Wembley — against Uruguay on March 27 and against Japan four days later — with both matches part of their World Cup preparations.

"No, he won't play," Arteta told reporters. "We have a new assessment in about a week — we need to wait for the results. The injury is to his leg, to his calf."

According to British media, Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes is the leading candidate to take Eze's place in the squad.
