Canada at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Squad, Manager, Fixtures & Tournament History
Co-hosts and still chasing their first World Cup win — Canada take the stage for just the third time in their history, backed by a home crowd and a squad with more talent than ever before.
Canada will feature at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ as one of three co-hosts alongside Mexico and the United States — and for a nation with just two previous World Cup appearances to their name, it represents a moment of enormous significance. This is only Les Rouges' third time at football's biggest tournament, and with the backing of a passionate home crowd behind them, Jesse Marsch's side will be targeting something they have never yet managed: a win at the World Cup finals.
The ambitions don't stop there. With one of the most exciting generations of Canadian footballers ever assembled, the group stage may not be the ceiling this time around.
The Coach: Jesse Marsch
Marsch, appointed in May 2025, brings a distinctly North American story to the role. As a player, he was a pioneer — lining up in the very first season of Major League Soccer in 1996 and going on to make over 300 appearances in the league across his career. When he turned to coaching, he began on home soil with Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls before making the leap to Europe, where he took charge at Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig and Leeds United. His understanding of both the North American football landscape and the demands of elite European club management makes him a well-suited figure to lead Canada through a tournament on home soil.

Canada's First World Cup: Mexico 1986
Canada's first taste of World Cup football came at Mexico 1986, having topped a qualifying group containing Guatemala and Haiti. They were drawn into a demanding pool alongside France, Hungary and the Soviet Union — and the challenge proved too great. A 1-0 defeat to France, courtesy of a Jean-Pierre Papin header, was followed by consecutive 2-0 losses to Hungary and an Oleg Blokhin-inspired Soviet Union. Three games, three defeats, no goals — but a debut on the world stage nonetheless.
Canada's Last World Cup: Qatar 2022
Canada's return to the World Cup after a 36-year absence at Qatar 2022 brought genuine moments of promise, even if the results didn't reflect the performances. They pushed Belgium hard in their opener, creating a string of chances before eventually losing 1-0. Against Croatia, Alphonso Davies made history with a goal after just 67 seconds — Canada's first-ever World Cup goal — though the match ended in a 4-1 defeat. A 2-1 loss to eventual semi-finalists Morocco rounded off the group stage. No wins, but a squad that showed it belonged, and a fanbase that left Qatar believing the best is yet to come.
Canada's All-Time World Cup Top Scorer
Alphonso Davies is currently Canada's only scorer at the World Cup. His powerful header against Croatia in the second minute at Qatar 2022 — meeting Tajon Buchanan's right-wing cross to beat Dominik Livaković — was a moment that stopped a nation. It remains the only goal a Canadian player has scored at the finals, with Canada's other tally in Qatar coming via an own goal. With the attacking talent now available to Marsch, that particular record is unlikely to stand for long.
Canada's Most Capped World Cup Players
No fewer than 23 Canadian players have made three World Cup appearances — all earned at Qatar 2022, where the squad each featured across the group stage. Several of that group will be eager to add to their tallies when the tournament comes to their own backyard.
Canada's Most Memorable World Cup Moment
It took just 67 seconds. Shortly after Croatia kicked off at Khalifa International Stadium on 27 November 2022, goalkeeper Milan Borjan launched the ball forward to Cyle Larin on the halfway line. Larin slipped it wide to Tajon Buchanan on the right, who drove forward and delivered a precise cross into the box. Davies, arriving at full sprint, stooped and directed a thundering header past Livaković. Canada had scored their first-ever World Cup goal — and the noise from their supporters was unlike anything the tournament had heard from a Canadian crowd before. The result ultimately went against them, but that moment belonged entirely to Les Rouges.
Canada's Biggest World Cup Win
Canada are still waiting for their first victory at the World Cup. But with home support, a talented squad and a coach who understands this moment, the wait may be about to end.
