Cabo Verde at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Squad, Manager, Fixtures & Tournament History
An archipelago of half a million people, a football culture built on unity and diaspora, and a first-ever World Cup — Cabo Verde's qualification for 2026 is one of the most remarkable stories in the history of the tournament.
For a small island nation of around 500,000 people covering just 4,000 square kilometres, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup™ is an achievement of extraordinary proportions. Yet that is exactly what Cabo Verde have done — securing their place at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in Canada, Mexico and the United States and writing the most remarkable chapter in their footballing history.
The national team only came into existence in 1978, three years after the country gained independence. In the decades since, the Blue Sharks have grown steadily in experience, ambition and quality — fuelled by a passionate football culture that binds the islands together and extends across a vast global diaspora. Players of Cabo Verdean descent have increasingly answered the call to represent the nation, turning what was once a local project into a genuinely international one. The result of that long-term effort is a first-ever World Cup appearance — and a story that will inspire the entire country.
The Coach: Bubista
Pedro Leitão Brito — universally known as Bubista — is the architect of Cabo Verde's historic achievement, and few people are more deeply connected to the national team's identity. A former captain and central defender, he played across Angola, Spain and Portugal before transitioning into coaching with the same tactical intelligence and leadership qualities that defined his playing days.
He took over as head coach in 2020 with a clear mission: to take the Blue Sharks where they had never been before. His approach is built on defensive solidity, disciplined organisation, tactical flexibility and the ability to hurt opponents on the counter-attack. Crucially, he has also fostered a dressing room environment defined by genuine team spirit — an intangible quality that has proven just as important as any tactical system throughout the qualifying campaign.
Under Bubista, Cabo Verde have not merely improved — they have been transformed.

How Cabo Verde Qualified
Cabo Verde's path to the World Cup was built on the foundation of an exceptional home record — five wins from five matches at home, with a clean sheet in every single one. It was fitting, then, that qualification was confirmed on home soil: a 3-0 victory over Eswatini in Praia on the tenth and final matchday of CAF qualifying sealed their historic place in the draw.
They topped a demanding group that included Cameroon and Angola — two of Africa's most established football nations — finishing four points clear of Cameroon in second. Consistency, a competitive mentality and the results of years of patient development all came together at exactly the right moment.
Several of the players who battled so closely against Nigeria in the Qatar 2022 qualifying campaign — including captain Ryan Mendes, goalkeeper Vozinha and defender Roberto Lopes — remained central figures in the squad that finally got over the line. This was no overnight success.
