Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Squad, Manager, Fixtures & Tournament History
Back at the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, Austria arrive in North America under the visionary Ralf Rangnick — a side transformed, a nation reawakened, and a bronze medal from 1954 as the benchmark they're determined to surpass.
The FIFA World Cup 2026™ in Canada, Mexico and the United States marks a long-awaited return to the global stage for Austria. Having featured at seven previous editions of the tournament, the Austrians last appeared at the finals back in 1998 — a gap of 28 years that makes their qualification for 2026 all the more meaningful.
The 1954 bronze medallists sealed top spot in their qualifying group with a 1-1 draw at home to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 November 2025, booking their place in North America and drawing a line under nearly three decades of absence from the world's biggest football stage.
The Coach: Ralf Rangnick
Rangnick has been one of European football's most influential figures for decades — as a coach, as a sporting director, and as the man widely credited with pioneering the high-intensity pressing style that has since been adopted across the game at every level. His appointment as Austria head coach in late April 2022 signalled serious intent.
His club career took in multiple stints with Schalke — where he won the 2010/11 DFB-Pokal — alongside spells at Stuttgart, Hannover and Hoffenheim. His most transformative work came at RB Leipzig, where he architected the club's extraordinary rise from the regional leagues to the top of the Bundesliga. A brief caretaker spell at Manchester United preceded his move into international management.
With Austria, the results have spoken for themselves. He guided the team to UEFA EURO 2024 and then, after turning down an approach from Bayern Munich, delivered World Cup qualification — ending the country's long exile from football's greatest stage.

How Austria Qualified
Drawn into UEFA Group H alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Cyprus and San Marino, Austria hit the ground running — winning their first five qualifying matches, a run that included their largest ever victory, a 10-0 demolition of San Marino in October 2025. Marko Arnautović scored four times that evening to become his country's all-time leading scorer.
Just as qualification seemed a formality, a shock 1-0 defeat in Romania reopened the group. Austria steadied themselves with a narrow win over Cyprus and went into their final fixture needing just a point against Bosnia and Herzegovina. They fell behind to a corner-headed goal inside the first quarter of an hour, but kept their composure and levelled through Michael Gregoritsch's composed finish in the 78th minute — enough to secure the draw, the group and the ticket to North America.

Austria's Best World Cup: Switzerland 1954
Austria's finest tournament remains the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, where a golden generation guided by coach Walter Nausch claimed a bronze medal. Built around iconic figures including Gerhard Hanappi, Ernst Stojaspal and captain Ernst Ocwirk, they swept through the group stage with a perfect record — beating Scotland 1-0 and routing Czechoslovakia 5-0.
The quarter-final against hosts Switzerland produced one of the most extraordinary matches in World Cup history — a breathless 7-5 victory that remains the highest-scoring game the tournament has ever seen. The semi-final brought a 6-1 defeat to West Germany, but Austria responded by beating deposed champions Uruguay 3-1 in the third-place play-off. Seventeen goals in four knockout matches — a generation that knew how to entertain.
Austria's Last World Cup: France 1998
Austria's most recent World Cup appearance came in France in 1998 under Herbert Prohaska, drawn into Group B alongside Italy, Cameroon and Chile. Their campaign had a certain dramatic quality to it — they scored in second-half stoppage time in all three of their matches — but it ultimately wasn't enough. Two 1-1 draws and a 2-1 defeat to Italy, in which they pulled one back in the 92nd minute, left them on two points and one short of progressing. A tournament that summed up the fine margins of the group stage.
Austria's First World Cup: Italy 1934
Austria arrived at their first World Cup in 1934 carrying the tag of favourites, having earned the nickname 'Wunderteam' off the back of an impressive run of just two defeats in 28 matches since April 1931. Hugo Meisl's side lived up to expectations in the early rounds — a 3-2 extra-time win over France and a 2-1 victory against Hungary took them to the semi-finals. But the hosts Italy edged them out 1-0, and a 3-2 defeat to Germany in the third-place play-off denied them the podium. Fourth place on debut for a side genuinely capable of winning it — a fine start to their World Cup story.
Austria's All-Time World Cup Top Scorer
Erich Probst holds the record with six World Cup goals — all scored at Switzerland 1954. He opened his account with the winner against Scotland, then helped himself to a hat-trick in the 5-0 group-stage win over Czechoslovakia. His next goal completed the remarkable 7-5 quarter-final victory over the hosts, before his final strike gave Austria brief hope in the semi-final against West Germany, cutting the deficit to 2-1 before the Germans ran out 6-1 winners.
Austria's Most Capped World Cup Players
Four players share the record for most appearances in an Austria shirt at the World Cup with 11 each: goalkeeper Friedrich Koncilia, defenders Erich Obermayer and Bruno Pezzey, and midfielder Herbert Prohaska — who would later manage the national team. All four played in every match at Argentina 1978 and Spain 1982, forming the backbone of a side that reached the second group stage at both editions.
Austria's Most Memorable World Cup Moments
The 7-5 quarter-final against Switzerland in 1954 is the jewel in Austria's World Cup crown — a match played in searing 40°C heat that became the highest-scoring encounter in the tournament's history. It was made all the more remarkable by the fact that Austria's goalkeeper Kurt Schmied was suffering from sunstroke throughout, yet pressed on regardless with substitutions not yet permitted under the rules of the time.
Fast forward to 1978, and Austria produced another moment that has never been forgotten — at least not on their side of the border. Facing reigning world champions West Germany in the second group stage, with nothing but pride at stake after two defeats, Austria pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory to dethrone their neighbours on 21 June 1978. For Austrians, it became known as the 'Miracle of Córdoba'. For Germans, rather less affectionately, it was the 'Disgrace of Córdoba'.
Austria's Biggest World Cup Win
Austria's most dominant result at the World Cup came in 1954, in the 5-0 group-stage victory over Czechoslovakia. Probst scored three and Stojaspal added two as Austria finished level with Uruguay at the top of Group 3, progressing as group winners on the drawing of lots. They would go on to face Uruguay again — beating them 3-1 in the third-place play-off to claim the bronze medal.
